How to throw a fun, delicious and kid-approved Earth Day Party!

April 18, 2012

earth day party cookies cherylsWelcome back readers!

Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22, 2012! Environmental awareness is on the rise and garnering observances all over the world to bring attention to the things we can do to help our environment no matter how big or small the task. Earth Day can be a great time to start teaching your children at an early age how they can take up these responsibilities, or even use this day to start a change in your own habits. While this day is certainly very important, we also enjoy all the fun prospects that can go with it. One of which is throwing an Earth Day party! (Need more time to plan? Extend the fun and learning and make this an “Earth Week” celebration with the party next weekend!)

Green and blue are definitely the go to colors for your Earth Day Party decorations. We’re betting you can find tons of great table cloths, pillows, linens and everything needed for an eco-friendly party. Just be sure to buy stuff you will use again or can donate when you’re done. When looking for plates, utensils and cups make sure to find all recycled/recyclable products or items that you can use again in the future! Mason jars have been a popular choice for parties in the last year with very good reason. The reuse of mason jars is an endless list of fun and easy DIY projects. You can use them as centerpieces with bouquets of flowers in them, keep drinks fresh in them and ready for use, preserves, reuse for indoor plants, literally anything! Our friends at Celebrations.com have a very simple “dipped mason jar” how to on their blog here. mason jar uses cco

Looking for a fun and edible centerpiece idea? We’ve got you covered! Our new cookie flower pots are perfect for a family-friendly Earth Day party. Our delicious buttercream frosted cookies are delivered freshly made and decorated with spring and floral shapes and colors, contained in a reusable tin. All of our cookies are made with the finest and freshest of ingredients with no added preservatives! Kids will love the bright festive colors and sweet tastes. We also have plenty of flower, lady bug and butterfly cookies to place at the table as decorative Earth Day treats.

Other great snacks to include at your Earth Day party:

  • Mixed Veggie tray with ranch dip
  • Mixed Fruit tray with yogurt dip
  • “Ants on a Log” (celery, peanut butter and raisins)
  • Sliced apples with peanut butter, Nutella or caramel
  • Popcorn
  • Small sandwiches with wheat or multi-grain bread

Of course no Earth Day Party would be complete without some fun and educational activities! All activities are inexpensive (or free!), fun and easy to do no matter the size of your party.

  • Earth Day Word Puzzle: Create your own crossword or word scramble list (can find free programs online) using Earth Day related words!
  • Recycle Relay: Divide into teams (2 or 3 teams depending on party size) and give each team a bin filled with recyclables like plastic bottles, milk jugs, cardboard, etc. and three empty bins labeled as “Plastic,” “Paper” and “Glass.” Tell the teams that the first team to correctly sort all of their items in the proper bins wins!
  • Earth Day Pledge: Let them decorate plain white t-shirts with fabric markers or eco-friendly fabric paint with their Earth Day resolutions and ways that they can help the environment!

At the end of the day, you can make a good bag using recycled paper lunch bags filled with an individual Cheryl’s cookie (!), pencils, stickers, and (a great find from the Target dollar spot!) a small potted plant for them to take home.

This is a great party to throw anytime during the nice weather months ahead, with a great message that’s important to learn about every day of the year.

Happy (early) Earth Day!

Sweet Spring Celebration

March 21, 2012
Lemon Treats Gift Cheryls Cookies and Cakes Spring

Lemon Treats Gift

Welcome Back!

Spring is here! Warm weather means citrus flavors to us: tangy lime, spritely orange and zesty lemon; it also means not turning on the oven! Whether you’re celebrating indoors or out, bright colors will be key; try bringing out a festive table cloth incorporating the colors mixed with white plates.

We found this easy and family friendly drink (courtesy of drinksmixer.com) called Spring Fever.

You’ll need:

¾ oz lemon juice
¾ oz mango syrup
1 ½ oz pineapple juice
2 oz blood orange juice

Shake well over ice cubes in a shaker and strain into a glass half-filled with crushed ice.

*Helpful hint: if you don’t want your drinks diluted by the ice, cut out some fruit before-hand like melons or honey dew and freeze them. When your drinks are ready, replace the ice cubes with the frozen fruit!

Our sister-brand Celebrations.com already has a few great Spring and Summer recipes perfect for beating the heat and staying fresh, but one definitely caught our attention. Their Spring Citrus Salad is the perfect cure to the Winter slump we’ve all been feeling. It’s colorful, full of flavor and best of all: easy to make! Check out the recipe here on their website. For this purpose, we’ll go ahead and say that you don’t need to roast the beets; they taste great either way you choose.

Spring Citrus Salad Recipe

Spring Citrus Salad

Now on to our favorite part: dessert! All of our desserts are lovingly made with artisanal touches. We’re with our desserts through every part of the baking process; creating the mixture, flouring and buttering the pans, bringing to and from the oven, watching them rise, frosting the cookies and brownies, and many other loving details. Obviously we love all our cookies and cakes the same, but there is a special place in our hearts (and stomachs) for our lemon flavored treats. For all of our lemon treats, to secure the best flavor, we hand-squeeze lemons into our mixtures and use fresh lemon zest! You won’t find any artificial flavors near our sweet treats. All of our desserts are as homemade as you can get, so don’t be surprised when your party guests are impressed with your great baking skills (don’t worry, we won’t tell)!

Miss Grace Lemon Bundt Cake

Miss Grace Lemon Bundt Cake

So which lemon dessert should you choose? Our Miss Grace Lemon Bundt cake makes for the perfect Spring and Summer treat. Hand-dipped in our secret recipe lemon glaze to give it the moist and delicious taste, it’s also light, fluffy and great for sharing. Our Lemon Treats Gift is great for parties or gatherings as it offers a wider variety of desserts, including a glazed Miss Grace Lemon mini Bundt cake, zesty lemon buttercream frosted cookies and a lemon tea cake. A larger gift option also includes Lemon Cake slices.

Enjoy the warm weather and Spring recipes until next time!

Holiday Entertaining with Cheryl’s

November 29, 2011

Welcome back cookie & brownie fans!

The Holiday season has officially started! That means, buying presents, decorating your home, sending out greeting cards, and the always festive holiday party. While it’s the most wonderful time of year, it’s also the most stressful, so let Cheryl’s help take some of the work off your plate (well, put something better on them!)

Mrs. Beasleys chocolate frosting bundt cake Cheryls
On Wednesday, November 15, the whole Cheryl’s family worked together to be the shining star of our media Holiday party at our Los Angeles Mrs. Beasley’s location. Top tier media guests and influential bloggers such as Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, NPR, Rockin’ Mama, Romy Raves, Santa Monica Times, The Recessionista and more joined us for an evening of gourmet cookies, delectable cakes, brownies, and festive Holiday trends and tips provided by Celebrations.com expert Rachel Hollis (“I Do Over”). And lucky you! We’re sharing some of them here.

A couple of great decorating tips for your Holiday party can be done easily and without breaking budget! Transform your space into a trendy holiday winter wonderland by repurposing things you already have. Hollis placed candied almonds within decorative champagne glasses and laid them out on the dessert table. She also repurposed the gift boxes featured within a Cheryl’s cookies holiday gift tower to create a festive tiered plated dessert tray, and used candle holders to place the Miss Grace famed bundt cakes, along with other dessert creations. These tips make for a fun, festive, and creative way to display all that your Holiday party has to offer (and we know your friends will be marveled by your ingenious skills).

Cheryls truffle cookie milk snowmen Another key feature of the event came from an entertaining trend quickly gaining momentum, especially around Holiday entertaining: having a festive dessert table for guests, and a designated kid’s dessert table. For the main dessert table, Hollis incorporated her festively fun Holiday entertaining ideas such as the repurposed champagne glasses, candle holders, and Cheryl’s cookie gift tower plates. For the children’s holiday dessert table, Hollis used desserts from Cheryl’s, Mrs. Beasley’s, and Miss Grace to create delicious elements for children (and adults!) to enjoy. She placed Cheryl’s mini brownies on popsicle sticks, created milk jars with snow man heads using Mrs. Beasley’s famous truffle cookies, and added a child’s touch of décor to Cheryl’s buttercream frosted snowflake cookies. It was certainly a fun and deliciously festive time for all!

No need to fret about all the Holiday entertaining duties you’ve given yourself this Holiday season. With Cheryl’s family of desserts, we make Holiday Entertaining a breeze. Try out some of our tips and tricks this Holiday for a fun time guaranteed!

Thankful Thursday Thanksgiving Thanksgiveaway

November 10, 2011

Welcome back Cheryl’s fans!

November is the time for crisp air, golden leaves, warm nights inside, and Thanksgiving! It’s the holiday that’s sandwiched in between Halloween and Christmas and usually gets forgotten about, though I can’t imagine why. Sure, you don’t get to dress up in costume and get free candy for a day, no one really writes songs about it, and you don’t get presents, but there is a lot more to Thanksgiving than we give it credit for.

Thanksgiving is the time to spend with family and friends and give thanks for all the wonderful things in your life and theirs. It’s an excuse to get everyone together over a good meal and catch up on what’s going on. Thanksgiving allows you to celebrate all that you have, without getting stuck on presents or what you did and didn’t receive this year. We should all appreciate Thanksgiving a bit more and treat the holiday as it should be treated, without letting it get lost between old pumpkins and giant display ornaments!

Personally, I love Thanksgiving. I love everything about Thanksgiving right down to the wishbone! I have such a large family with my parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, friends of family, all of their kids…you get the picture. We try to get together as much as we can so that we don’t lose touch, but holidays like Thanksgiving guarantee that we can all spend at least one day together, and impress each other with a chosen dish we’ve decided to make and bring to Thanksgiving dinner. One of my uncles and my grandma will usually take turns making the turkey, one of my aunts has the best mashed potatoes and potato salad I’ve ever tasted, and my mom is usually trying out new recipes and dishes each year so I’ll just have to wait and see what it is. This year, I’m sure I’ll get some praise when I bring over some Cheryl’s Thanksgiving cookies for my whole family to try…

All of this is why we’re happy to be doing our Thanksgiveaway Thanksgiving Sweepstakes for all of our fans! We just want to say thanks for sticking with us as fans, customers, and friends. We know that none of what we do would matter without all of your support. So join in the fun and let us show you how thankful we are that you are our fans! Our Thanksgiving Thanksgiveaway Sweepstakes will go on each Thankful Thursday leading up to Thanksgiving, where you could win our new Thanksgiving turkey cookie greeting.

Good friends, good fans, and good cookies: that’s a lot to be thankful for!

Happy Halloween!

October 24, 2011

Halloween was always my favorite time of year growing up.  It meant pumpkin picking, hay rides, halloween parties and best of all trick or treating!

I remember the fun would start in early October with the big decision of what to dress up as and the anticipation of walking door to door seemed like it lasted forever!  In addition to the exciting Halloween events, I remember the thrill of receiving a Cheryl’s butter cream frosted pumpkin cutout as a surprise from my mom.   We would sit together at the kitchen table and eat the cookies with a glass of milk.   I would always savor every bite saving the green stem as the last lick of butter cream.

Now with two kids of my own there is still that same level of excitement for the Halloween celebrations!    My daughter loves picking out her Halloween costumes and counts down on a calendar to the big night to ring the doorbell and yell trick or treat!   However, the best part of it all now, as a mom, is sharing with her the same butter cream pumpkin cutout cookie with a glass of milk that my mom shared with me.   That same delicious hand-frosted pumpkin cookie brings a smile to her face as it did to mine twenty five years ago!

Happy Halloween!

Breast Cancer Awareness

October 18, 2011

We are proud cookie people (an understatement, really). We’re always thinking of new recipes; new flavors, new designs, trying to get that perfect taste, and so on. But when we can use our resources to help important efforts like Breast Cancer Awareness, that’s what truly makes us proud.

We’re proud to say that for the last 12 years, we have been sponsors for Central Ohio’s Race for the Cure, and have partnered with several worthy organizations like The Stephanie Spielman Fund, The James Cancer Hospital, Ohio Health for Women, and several other organizations throughout central Ohio. These are organizations very near and dear to us, and an effort we believe in.

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer death in American women. The American Cancer Society also estimates that 2,000 men are diagnosed with the disease every year. Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer for women. But did you know that according to the American Cancer Society, mammograms can often detect breast cancer years before a woman can find a lump herself, and when the disease is caught at an early, localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 97 percent! You have a better chance of surviving if found early, so talk to your doctor to help you decide when and how often to get a mammogram.

On top of our partnerships, we’ve also developed our ‘Cure’ gift line, where we give 10% of the proceeds back in support to breast cancer research directed to the Susan G. Komen Foundation Columbus Affiliate, which hopes to save lives and end breast cancer. So you can all help us with this great cause while still enjoying the homemade Cheryl’s recipes you love. You can choose from 12 to 100 of our delicious buttercream pink frosted cut-out heart cookies, delivered in our signature bow gift box; A simple design, with a huge message.

Join us in the fight, one bite at a time!
